The devices are the same? Yes. The configuration is the same? NO, NO & NO.
For a hearing aid center, you are a customer. For us, you are a patient. A patient requires different care compared to a customer. In medical model, you receive more comprehensive and long term care by Audiologist. Hearing aid is not just a one time buy product; it requires long term guidance and support. The choice of audiologist is THE MOST IMPORTANT factor because we are the ones who can help you get the maximum productivity & longevity out of your device.
Are the instruments used for hearing test in both models are same? Yes. Does that mean the test is the same? NO, NO & NO.
Not everyone can drive a car the same way & not everyone conducts the test the same way. A test conducted by a medical professional is one backed with years of training & understanding of the science behind it. This test forms the basis of hearing aid programming & even 0.1% inaccuracy in it can change the quality of hearing drastically.
The hunt for discounts & the art of not getting fooled
Professional audiologist will help you to understand reason behind your hearing loss with their differential diagnosis skills using various tests. In most of retail stores or centers try to recommend you a hearing aids without understanding nature of your hearing. This is the major reason for limited benefit from hearing aids. Retail-model hearing aids are purchased stores or online (which will not offer any warranty on online purchase). They may be cheaper but they don't come with follow up visits or professional advice. You may get the best deal, but in the long run you do get fooled.
The personal touch & permanence
Patients who opt for the medical model receive treatment from audiologists, who have a degree and are licensed. Retailers, on the other hand, may employ audiologists, but it's not a requirement. More often they employ hearing instrument specialists, who do not have degrees but are diploma holders and frequently paid on commission, who are neither responsible nor are permanent. Because patients can see the same audiologist during each visit, they receive continuity of care; patients who go to a retailer, on the other hand, may be helped by an audiologist one time and a hearing instrument specialist the next. There is usually no personalized care.
In most cases, retail model tries to offer everything on day 1 before your purchase of the product (discount offers, free service and trial, etc) but clinical help from professionals like certified Audiologists and/ENT clinic will remain constant during this entire journey.
Remember, there will be always someone who provides things at cheaper rate. But when you get anything with HEAVY DISCOUNTS then COST is YOU!
